We are delighted you are considering Yarm School for you and your family. We are proud to be recognised as one of the leading schools in the North East for our impressive academic results and outstanding facilities. However, we offer so much more than an excellent academic education: we educate for life.

We have put together some frequently asked questions to help guide you through our admissions process. From arranging a visit to our scholarships and bursaries, find out more below:

Why Join Yarm School?

Yarm School is one of the top schools in the North East of England. We were recently listed as 2nd in the ‘Best Private Schools in the North East’ by The Sunday Times (November, 2023) and recognised as a leading school in the North by Tatler Schools Guide. Our outstanding academic achievements also regularly see us place as one of the top performing schools in Teesside.

We aim to provide a nurturing environment where your child will thrive both inside and outside of the classroom. Values are encouraged that ensure our pupils become adults who will contribute positively to society. We also help children develop the attributes and skills sought by employers so that they are equipped for life beyond school.

Activity Lessons, Outdoor Education, Sport, Music and Drama all play extremely important roles in school life. The opportunities on offer coupled with our caring, friendly and mutually supportive environment encourage pupils to step outside their comfort zone and discover new talents and interests.

What is your Catchment Area?

We are located in Yarm in the North East of England and serve a wide catchment area. Our pupils join us from across the North East and North Yorkshire, including Stockton, Middlesbrough, Darlington, Richmond, Thirsk, Wynyard, and Hartlepool.

When should I start the Admissions process?

The School’s main entry point is at the start of the academic year, however, applications are welcome throughout the year and are subject to availability of spaces and timing. Boys and Girls are welcomed into the Nursery at the start of the term in which they will turn three years old.

How do I apply?

To apply for a place at Yarm School, you should complete our Application Form and return it to the Admissions Secretary together with the £60 registration fee.

The Application Form can also be located at the back of our Information For Parents booklet, along with our key admissions information.

For Senior School places for September please get in touch with our Admissions Secretary, Mrs Jane Herbert, before you complete an application form. You can contact her on 01642 786023 or at Jane.Herbert@yarmschool.org

Is there an Admissions entry assessment?

The School is academically selective and, broadly, admits those who are performing at the nationally average standard and above. Most pupils progress through the School until they leave at 18, but progression between sections of the School is subject to satisfactory academic progress and behaviour.

The entry assessments vary for different age groups, from informal assessments in the Pre-Prep to more formal assessments for entry into the Senior School. Read more about our Entrance Assessments.

When does my child receive an offer?

Offers for a place at Yarm School will differ depending on the age of your child:

  • Nursery: pupils are required to visit the School and offers are made following the visit.
  • Pre-Prep and Prep School: offers are made at the end of a taster day.
  • Senior School: offers are generally made a week after the January entrance examination.
  • Sixth Form: offers are made in February, after our Sixth Form Interviews have taken place.
Do you offer scholarships and bursaries?

Yarm School is keen to attract pupils of considerable potential who will make the most of the opportunities on offer. We offer Scholarships and Bursaries to those entering First Year (Year 7) and Sixth Form pupils. See the Scholarships and Bursaries page for more details.
