Former Students Return to Share Insights at Economics and Business Working Lunch

A group of ten former students returned to Yarm for the biggest Economics and Business ‘Working Lunch’ of the year, offering valuable advice and insights to current pupils.

Our ‘Working Lunch’ sessions happen almost weekly, and usually involve a single former pupil speaking to current students about their workplace and career choices. However, following last year’s successful larger event, Miss Rhodes invited her entire Class of 2023 Upper Sixth Economics and Business students to return and share their experiences.

True to their word, they reunited in January, with eight attending in person and two joining via Google Meet due to university term dates. They were welcomed by a packed room of current Sixth Form students eager to hear about their experiences.

The session began with introductions before a lively Q&A, covering key topics such as university life and study demands, the cost of student accommodation, commuting to university and the reality of apprenticeships.

Former pupils also shared their top tips for excelling in Economics and Business. For Economics, clustering techniques, maximising concept test marks, and additional resources were highlighted. In Business, past paper practice, lunchtime interventions, and pre-exam clinics were recommended.

Reflecting on their own experiences, the alumni offered words of wisdom to their younger selves:

  • Start early with personal statements and EPQs.
  • Research university locations, not just courses, as city versus campus life varies greatly.
  • Get involved with everything going on at school, like societies, sports, and drama.
  • Ask questions and seek support – gather all the information and help you can to make decisions.

With this hugely successful group ‘Working Lunch’ complete, plans are already in motion for next year’s event. In the meantime, the regular ‘Working Lunches’ continue to draw lots of students to learn about the career paths of former Yarm pupils.

Miss Rhodes expressed her appreciation for the returning pupils, saying:

“It was wonderful to catch up with our former pupils and hear how well they’re doing. Their willingness to share insights is invaluable, and we’re incredibly grateful for their time.”
