Un-bridled Joy at Yarm Phab Club

Yarm School’s Phab Club recently welcomed a very special guest – Acer, a therapy pony from the Unicorn Centre.

The visit was a hit with both Phab Club members and guests, who thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the gentle pony. Acer brought smiles, laughter to the session, highlighting the power of animal-assisted therapy.

Phab, a UK charity with a 60-year legacy, works to inspire and support disabled and non-disabled children, young people and adults to make the most of life. With 140 clubs across England and Wales, Phab enables over 8,000 members to share inclusive activities and build friendships.

Yarm School’s Phab Club meets fortnightly during term time and is open to young people aged 11 to 18 with disabilities. Sessions offer a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, board games and table tennis. While children enjoy socialising with fourth and fifth year pupils (Years 10 and 11) and members of Yarm staff, parents and guardians are invited to relax in the School’s Atrium, which boasts stunning views of the River Tees.

Hannah Guy, Teacher at Yarm School and lead coordinator of the Phab Club, said: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Acer and the team from the Unicorn Centre to Phab Club. Our members loved interacting with the pony, and the joy on their faces said it all.

“Phab is a fantastic initiative that champions inclusion, friendship and shared experiences. We are thrilled to run a Phab Club regularly at Yarm, providing a space where everyone can come together and have fun.

“Being part of Phab is not only incredibly enjoyable but also a valuable learning opportunity for our pupils. They gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities while also recognising their resilience, determination and great sense of fun.”
