Yarm High Street has been crowned English Rising Star in the Great British High Street Awards 2019.
We are extremely proud to be a part of such a friendly and vibrant community, and we were delighted to meet the Great British High Street Award judges last August when they came to visit the School’s Princess Alexandra Auditorium. Since opening in 2012, the PAA and our Friarage Theatre have become an important cultural hub for our community, with thousands of visitors taking advantage of what’s on offer. The diverse programme of events includes famous comedians and singers, as well as theatre, live screenings and community events such as our popular Community Carols concert.
The school’s location at the top of the High Street means that parents, staff and pupils often visit the award-winning High Street before and after school, and on the weekend when we have sports fixtures. The wide range of businesses make it a unique place to shop and relax.
Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster, said: “It is fantastic news for not only Yarm but also for Teesside and North Yorkshire to have an award-winning High Street and I’m thrilled that the judges recognised the special qualities of our town. I would like to congratulate the team that organised such an effective, community-driven campaign which showcased the best of Yarm in this national competition, bringing together the businesses in Yarm to help win this accolade. The school was delighted to play a part in hosting the judges and we are very proud to be part of a friendly and forward-thinking High Street.”
