Outdoor Education

Yarm School offers an extensive Outdoor Education programme which provides opportunities for pupils to learn and develop a wide range of life skills, promoting self-confidence and self-reliance, personal organisation, teamwork, responsibility, leadership, and environmental awareness.

Whole year group residential trips are aimed at giving pupils a taste of the great outdoors. By the end of the trips, pupils will have camped, climbed a mountain, lit a fire, and taken part in activities such as:

  • Canoeing and Kayaking
  • Caving
  • Climbing
  • Cycling
  • Ghyll Scrambling
  • Mountain Expeditioning
  • Sailing
  • Woodland Skills

Yarm School employs two full-time and highly qualified Outdoor Education specialists who organise these activities and trips. Rather than using external companies, we are able to ensure that pupils receive the best experiences with staff who get to know them extremely well. We also have our own equipment store and as a result we are able to keep the cost of activities and trips as possible.

Trips and activities allow pupils in any year group to pursue existing interests or explore new ones. Day trips on weekends, take advantage of our proximity to the North Yorkshire Moors. The Outdoor Education Booklet summarises our weekly and weekend adventurous activities and expeditions.

Expeditions to more exotic overseas locations take place during school holidays. Recent trips have included rock climbing in Fontainebleau, an activity trip to the Alps, expeditions to Scotland and Peru. The school’s trips and excursions booklet gives a flavour of some of the opportunities on offer.
